On 14 October, the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) hosted a scientific session on "Climate Change and Ecosystem Sustainability: Threats, Challenges, Solutions" dedicated to the "Year of Solidarity for a Green Planet". The event was organised jointly by the Department of Biology and Medical Sciences of ANAS and the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the Ministry of Science and Education.

Before the beginning of the session, all guests familiarised themselves with the exhibition dedicated to the "Year of Solidarity for a Green Planet" and COP29 (Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change).
During their speeches, the participants emphasised on the need to develop interdisciplinary research in fields such as biology, ecology and agriculture as they are critical for combating climate change.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli opened the event, mentioned that holding COP29 in Azerbaijan is an important historical event, testifying to the world community's confidence in the country. He also noted the organisation of a number of events in preparation for the conference, in particular informal consultations in Shamakhi and the establishment of a "Climate Troika" between Azerbaijan, the UAE and Brazil.
In addition, Dr Mubariz Hajibayev said that climate change has a significant impact not only on the environment, but also on socio-economic processes. He emphasised the importance of environmental education and outreach to change society's attitude towards environmental issues.
At the end of the session, the topic for discussion was the fight against soil erosion, droughts and reduction of biodiversity. According to Academician Irada Huseynova, it is necessary to develop new climate scenarios and constantly monitor changes in natural resources such as water, soil and atmosphere. She also emphasised the importance of developing new sustainable crop varieties that could withstand climate change.
