To implement the main scientific purposes of the scientists from Azerbaijan, the research should be published in Scopus. In general, researchers are guided by the quartile of the journal in Scopus and choose Q2 and Q3 editions. Nowadays, "Scientific Publications" offers to consider how to publish a Scopus research free of charge in agronomy and the biological sciences. In addition, it is recommended to read how to find a quartile in Scopus.
Which journals are in Scopus?
The Scopus science database indexes publications from a wide range of research areas, and they vary in many factors:
- Scientometric indicators.
- Thematic fields.
- Publishers.
- Business models.
- Stability, integrity and much more.
For the purposes of this research, we will only touch upon a small part of the publications in this scientometric database, namely the free Scopus Q2-Q3 journals in agronomy and the biological sciences.
How to find a journal in the Scopus database?
To find a journal in the Scopus database from your area of interest, which in our case is agronomy and biological sciences, it is necessary:
- Perform a search on the source.
- Select the search option "Subject area".
- Get to know the list of research fields. In our case, the "Agricultural and Biological Sciences" is a good place to start.
- If you are focusing on a narrower subject area, choose one, such as "Plant Science".
To find a quartile of a journal in Scopus and limit the list by the required indicator, once the list of publications is displayed, the following must be done:
- Find the "Citescore highest quartile" area.
- Select the required indicators (2nd quartile, 3rd quartile).
- Click on "Apply".

How much does it cost to publish the research in Scopus?
Considering this question only from the perspective of the amount of research processing fees and APC, the cost can be extremely different. It depends on many factors, the most important of which are the business model of the publication and the influence of the journal/publisher.
Notably, there is no such thing as a completely free journal, as the publication, its website and the work of specialists have to be financed by someone. But it does not always have to be done by the author. It is possible to publish the research in Scopus at no cost to the author, for example, if the author has grant support or sponsorship from an organization.
In addition, free Scopus journals include funding models such as:
- Readers pay to read the material (conventional type of access).
- The journal has sponsors who are interested in research from a particular area of expertise.
- The publication can produce issues at the expense of advertising funds.
Open Access journals (specific types of open access) can charge authors for research processing and/or APC. The amount can range from $250-$500 to over $4,000.
Where can journal research be published for free?
Publish the research in Scopus for free to authors in journals that follow the business models described above. "Scientific Publications" has compiled a list of free Scopus Q2-Q3 journals in agronomy and the biological sciences.

Scopus free journals 2022-2023 (Q2-Q3 agronomy): pros and cons
The list of free journals for publication provided represents only a very rough list to guide you. Admittedly, by choosing one or the other free Scopus journal, a scientist gains a number of advantages:
- Implementation of the scientific purpose.
- Scopus publication without large fees.
- Enhancing your self-image.
But, in addition, to the obvious advantages, there are some difficulties, which are useful to be reminded of in advance:
- Scopus free journals usually have very long queues for publication, as there is far more content than the editors and reviewers can handle promptly.
- These publications have a very low Acceptance rate, at 10-15%. Thus, only 1/10 of the proposed material is published.
- In addition to the field of study, content analysis is appropriate when selecting a journal, as editors frequently focus on a subject rather than on the subject area.
- The Scopus database is very dynamic, thus, without in-depth analysis, it cannot be predicted in advance whether all free journals are publishing bona fide and what policies they adhere to. Even the most stable publication is not immune to loss of indexation in the future.
- Scopus publications issued through the conventional type of access gather much lower quotation rates.
- In addition to the quartile value, there is a much longer list of indicators to consider. Accordingly, Scientific Publications recommends that scientists from Azerbaijan orient towards Q3 journals based on longstanding practice. They are considered the "golden mean" for publication in Scopus, they are easier to get into (than Q1-Q2), and publication there is suitable for almost all scientific purposes.
